How the Power of Collective Action is Creating Great Possibility in 2026

We have reason to celebrate this week! And I want to celebrate with you. We all just experienced a profound demonstration of the power of collective action.
I hope you were able to participate in one of the thousands of No King's events this past weekend. I was there for the event in my community and it was awesome. Fantastic energy, lots and lots of people. A wonderful collection of friends and neighbors and people I'd never met before. All of us gathered together in common cause, and to leverage the power of collective action. It was beyond impressive.
I also hope that when you got home, you had a chance to look through social media and everywhere else to see all the images and video of the amazing events all over the country and the world. And I hope you took a moment to reflect on what that really means.
There are three major sets of powerful evidence that momentum is increasing for us. The biggest, most obvious piece of evidence is the ever-growing No King's attendance and the number and diversity of communities touched.
Over 8 million people in over 3,300 local communities, including many in deep red territory in every state in the country. All of them showing up to say, what's happening is wrong. We want better. We are joining together to call for better, and to commit to creating better.
What was maybe the most exciting to me, although there were a lot of exciting things, was that thousands of those who showed up said that this was the first time they'd ever participated in any kind of a protest. They'd never done anything like that before. But they looked around at what was happening and they said, I can't be silent anymore. I can't be standing on the sidelines. I need to stand up, show up, and begin to take action.
But as I said, that’s just one set of evidence. There’s a lot more and it’s creating some great possibility for 2026.
In this episode, we share:
- Three powerful sets of evidence that momentum is building toward a big change in our favor
- Two important lessons that tell us what we need to do next as Nonprofit leaders
- Why the right wing is worried enough to double down on voter suppression, and how we can counter that
- Two actions Nonprofit leaders can take right now to help ensure our clients and volunteers are able to make their voices heard
- One excellent tool that every Nonprofit leader can use to streamline that assistance
Help spread the word! If you found value in this episode, I’d be grateful if you would leave a review on iTunes or wherever you listen. Your reviews help other nonprofit leaders find the podcast. Thanks!!

Welcome to the Nonprofit Power Podcast.
00:01:11.959 --> 00:01:13.218
I'm your host, Kath Patrick.
00:01:13.558 --> 00:01:20.549
I'm so glad you're here for today's episode because we have reason to celebrate! And I wanna celebrate with you.
00:01:21.049 --> 00:01:27.938
I hope you were able to participate in one of the thousands of No King's events this past weekend.
00:01:28.358 --> 00:01:32.019
I was there for the event in my community and it was awesome.
00:01:32.409 --> 00:01:35.918
Fantastic energy, lots and lots of people.
00:01:36.242 --> 00:01:40.412
A wonderful collection of friends and neighbors and people I'd never met before.
00:01:40.861 --> 00:01:43.581
All of us gathered there in common cause.
00:01:43.882 --> 00:01:46.367
And to demonstrate the power of collective action.
00:01:47.341 --> 00:01:49.652
It was beyond impressive.
00:01:50.465 --> 00:01:54.358
So I hope you were able to be at your local No Kings event.
00:01:54.838 --> 00:02:09.868
And I hope that when you got home, you had a chance to look through social media and everywhere else that there were images upon images and video of all of the amazing events all over the country and the world.
00:02:10.786 --> 00:02:16.846
The fact is there is powerful evidence that momentum is increasing for us.
00:02:17.295 --> 00:02:32.102
And the biggest, most obvious recent piece of evidence is the ever growing No King's attendance and the number of communities touched and the number of red communities touched.
00:02:32.491 --> 00:02:43.692
Which tells us that there is deep dissatisfaction in every corner of this country, but that people are willing to do something about it.
00:02:44.532 --> 00:02:54.276
Over 8 million people in over 3,300 local communities, including many in deep red territory in every state of the country.
00:02:54.937 --> 00:02:59.949
All of them showing up to say, what's happening is wrong.
00:02:59.979 --> 00:03:01.090
We want better.
00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:06.979
We are joining together to call for better and to commit to creating better.
00:03:07.909 --> 00:03:22.294
And what was maybe the most exciting to me, although there were a lot of exciting things, was that thousands of those who showed up said that this was the first time they'd ever participated in any kind of a protest.
00:03:22.294 --> 00:03:24.185
They'd never done anything like that before.
00:03:24.514 --> 00:03:29.235
But they looked around at what was happening and they said, I can't be silent anymore.
00:03:29.235 --> 00:03:31.724
I can't be standing on the sidelines.
00:03:31.784 --> 00:03:36.237
I need to stand up, show up, and begin to take action.
00:03:37.125 --> 00:03:40.685
So that's powerful piece of evidence number one.
00:03:41.617 --> 00:03:57.112
Another huge sign that our momentum is massively increasing, is the overwhelming special elections shifts in 2025 and early 2026, plus the regular elections that happened in Virginia and New Jersey.
00:03:57.612 --> 00:04:02.203
In 2025, there were 60 special elections for various offices.
00:04:02.600 --> 00:04:09.920
The Democrat outperformed the Republicans 2024 vote in 50 out of those 60 elections.
00:04:10.170 --> 00:04:16.550
The average swing from Republican to Democrat across all 60 was 13%.
00:04:17.050 --> 00:04:17.980
That's massive.
00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:21.810
Those are double digit swings in voter preference.
00:04:22.670 --> 00:04:30.478
The folks who are studying this, the people who take exit polls and survey voters and all of that, who dive way deeper on this than I do.
00:04:30.978 --> 00:04:36.418
Have basically identified that there are two reasons that's happening.
00:04:36.918 --> 00:04:40.656
One, it's because democratic voters are more motivated to vote.
00:04:41.161 --> 00:04:49.689
And because the people who voted Republican in 2024 have either switched to supporting Democrats or they're staying home.
00:04:50.189 --> 00:04:57.180
That's how you get those massive shifts in voting trends, and it's changing the results.
00:04:57.870 --> 00:05:07.560
Democrats flipped a total of 30 state legislative seats since the 2024 election, including in Texas, Iowa, and Florida.
00:05:08.083 --> 00:05:10.512
These are deep red states.
00:05:11.473 --> 00:05:20.682
In Virginia, which up to this point has been solidly purple, democrats secured their largest majority in the House of Delegates in 40 years.
00:05:21.182 --> 00:05:27.182
Democrats broke Republican super majorities in the state Senates of Iowa and Mississippi.
00:05:27.932 --> 00:05:38.463
They flipped a state Senate seat in a deep red region of Pennsylvania and pulled off an upset in a Georgia district that 47 had carried by double digits just the year before.
00:05:39.122 --> 00:05:46.766
And amusingly, just last week, we saw the same thing happen in of all places the district that includes Mar-a-Lago.
00:05:47.547 --> 00:05:56.016
There was a special election for a Florida house seat and the Democrat won by a decent margin of 2.4 percentage points.
00:05:56.016 --> 00:06:03.098
Which would be unremarkable, except that that has been a solidly Republican seat for years.
00:06:03.399 --> 00:06:10.949
And in the previous election, the Republican had won that seat by 19 points, just a year and a half before.
00:06:11.665 --> 00:06:16.870
These swings, these shifts are massive and they're happening all over.
00:06:17.110 --> 00:06:20.845
And they're happening in deep red districts, not just in the purple places.
00:06:21.516 --> 00:06:23.976
And then the other big piece of evidence is the polling.
00:06:24.476 --> 00:06:38.141
Now, things were already really bad for the orange one before he started an unnecessary war of choice, which is spiking oil prices, which is in turn sending gas up a dollar a gallon, so far.
00:06:38.591 --> 00:06:41.351
It's doing some other things, which you don't hear as much about.
00:06:41.591 --> 00:06:51.312
It's endangering fertilizer supply globally, including for American farmers, which will in turn spike grocery prices within a few months.
00:06:52.298 --> 00:06:57.189
Not to mention the prospect of increasing casualties among American troops.
00:06:58.062 --> 00:07:02.622
All of this is deeply unpopular across the political spectrum.
00:07:03.341 --> 00:07:06.795
That is not good for the Rs going into an election season.
00:07:07.545 --> 00:07:15.041
And they are exceedingly alarmed at the dramatic shifting in polling on approval ratings and everything else.
00:07:15.541 --> 00:07:23.862
47's approval ratings were already really bad, and they have gotten substantially worse in the last three to four weeks, with no end in sight.
00:07:24.911 --> 00:07:35.524
Any one of the three major plot points that I've called out, any one of them taken individually would be really positive.
00:07:36.154 --> 00:07:44.879
But when taken together, what they unquestionably show is that the country is unhappy with the direction things are going.
00:07:45.769 --> 00:07:50.779
And they are ready to stand up and take action to change it.
00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:54.069
So that tells us two things.
00:07:54.569 --> 00:07:57.079
Number one, and this is a huge thing.
00:07:57.470 --> 00:08:03.410
Because you know, right now coming off of No Kings, everybody's pretty jazzed and excited and the energy is high.
00:08:03.949 --> 00:08:09.850
But you know how things can be and you get to doom scrolling and all the negative conversations start to happen.
00:08:10.283 --> 00:08:16.612
So number one, don't let anybody drag you into pessimism or cynicism.
00:08:17.413 --> 00:08:29.233
There is real power in collective action, and there is real power in the shifts that we are seeing that have been moving steadily in one direction ever since the 2024 election.
00:08:29.983 --> 00:08:36.013
People are standing up and showing up and making it clear they are done with this administration.
00:08:36.312 --> 00:08:43.332
The power of each individual's action, combined with millions of others, has never been more clear.
00:08:43.613 --> 00:08:47.442
So ignore all that doom scrolling BS.
00:08:48.222 --> 00:08:53.383
We need to keep our eyes on the prize and focus all our energy toward positive action.
00:08:54.462 --> 00:08:58.753
Which leads me to the second thing, which is that we each have a job to do.
00:08:59.332 --> 00:09:00.352
We actually have several.
00:09:00.413 --> 00:09:17.062
But as Nonprofit leaders, one of the most significant is going to be to ensure that every single person in our communities who has been affected by these disastrous policies, has the opportunity to make their voice heard at the ballot box in the primaries, and in November.
00:09:18.023 --> 00:09:23.523
Now it's very important to also acknowledge that the Rs are terrified.
00:09:24.153 --> 00:09:29.373
They can read the results and see the trends and the polls just as well as we can.
00:09:30.273 --> 00:09:32.913
They can't get rid of 47.
00:09:32.972 --> 00:09:34.038
Well, they could, but they're not going to.
00:09:35.461 --> 00:09:37.711
So they gotta come up with something else.
00:09:38.160 --> 00:09:50.400
So what they're doing is they're doubling down on their strategy of voter suppression and restricting the right to vote, trying to intimidate voters as much as possible, and to confuse and disrupt the process wherever they can.
00:09:51.138 --> 00:09:54.587
We have to be ready for that and ready to counter it.
00:09:55.398 --> 00:09:57.048
Don't wring your hands about it.
00:09:57.317 --> 00:09:58.518
Take action.
00:09:59.018 --> 00:10:01.177
And that process begins now.
00:10:01.988 --> 00:10:19.342
It is not too early for every single person that you serve, every single volunteer, everybody else in your orbit at your organization, for all of them to be making sure right now that they are registered to vote and that their registration remains valid.
00:10:19.842 --> 00:10:22.363
This is the get ready phase right now.
00:10:22.753 --> 00:10:27.109
We'll have plenty of time to talk to people about the issues at stake and all of that.
00:10:27.109 --> 00:10:29.208
And there's a lot of great messaging coming your way.
00:10:30.089 --> 00:10:32.578
But we can start right here, right now.
00:10:33.235 --> 00:10:38.816
Getting ready and making sure that everyone who wants a voice will have that chance.
00:10:39.576 --> 00:10:42.846
There's a couple of really simple things you can do right away.
00:10:43.346 --> 00:10:48.326
One thing you can do is add a question to your intake forms and your follow up forms.
00:10:48.775 --> 00:10:52.706
Every time you're making contact with a client, add in a question.
00:10:53.245 --> 00:10:54.596
Are you registered to vote?
00:10:55.336 --> 00:11:04.123
And if they're unsure or if they're not registered, ask'em if they would like to register or if they'd like to double check whether they're registered.
00:11:04.940 --> 00:11:06.679
Even if they say they are registered.
00:11:07.159 --> 00:11:16.889
If it's been more than a year since they voted, or if they've changed address since they last voted, they should double check their registration status, just to be sure.
00:11:17.692 --> 00:11:25.312
We also wanna keep our eyes on the changing landscape around early voting and mail-in voting, because that is an evolving situation.
00:11:25.883 --> 00:11:31.100
We wanna make sure that people have accurate and up to the minute information as it develops.
00:11:31.350 --> 00:11:38.221
There are several national organizations that are keeping track of that, and I will share information on that with you in upcoming episodes.
00:11:38.801 --> 00:11:47.691
For right now, if you know there are efforts going on in your state, for example, to tinker with those processes, keep an eye on them.
00:11:48.557 --> 00:11:57.931
But no matter how you choose to vote, whether you do it on election day in person, you vote early by whatever means become available at that particular time.
00:11:58.260 --> 00:12:02.301
No matter what, registration is essential for all of them.
00:12:03.051 --> 00:12:10.971
If your registration isn't 100% in order, chances are good your vote will not be counted, particularly this year.
00:12:12.388 --> 00:12:14.817
That is the core message that people need to get.
00:12:15.595 --> 00:12:18.835
We don't want them being kind of sure, maybe, probably that they registered.
00:12:18.835 --> 00:12:23.004
We want'em to be a hundred percent sure that their registration is current and valid.
00:12:23.788 --> 00:12:27.597
And the good news is there is a super easy way to check that right now.
00:12:28.528 --> 00:12:33.868
There is a fantastic resource that will help make this so much easier for you and your folks.
00:12:34.427 --> 00:12:39.130
All of the state secretaries of state have a national association.
00:12:39.581 --> 00:12:44.780
And that national association has created a website that is all about voting.
00:12:45.030 --> 00:12:56.730
They have a Can I Vote page that has a super handy, all in one place way to link directly to the relevant state webpage.
00:12:57.217 --> 00:13:14.429
Where every voter can use these tools to check their voter registration status, to register to vote, to find their polling place, to check what forms of ID will be accepted, to check on absentee and early voting options.
00:13:14.789 --> 00:13:25.419
It covers all that for all 50 states, and it takes you directly to the individual states correct website, where they can check all that information online.
00:13:26.023 --> 00:13:30.013
I will link up that one mega website in the show notes so that you can go right to it.
00:13:30.893 --> 00:13:35.243
With all these kinds of things, I always recommend you tinker around with it yourself.
00:13:35.633 --> 00:13:40.493
Go ahead and put your own information in there and make sure first of all, that everything's working.
00:13:40.493 --> 00:13:42.232
No broken links or anything like that.
00:13:42.472 --> 00:13:49.163
But also so that you've been through it and you can walk someone else through it more efficiently and easily.
00:13:49.820 --> 00:13:53.519
Cause this may be the first time your clients or your volunteers will have done this.
00:13:53.927 --> 00:13:57.407
So the more that you can be an expert guide, the better.
00:13:58.440 --> 00:14:04.100
Very important to point out that when folks do this, they're not being tracked by anybody.
00:14:04.379 --> 00:14:09.143
They're just finding out what records exist already for them as a voter.
00:14:09.773 --> 00:14:16.597
And so if, for example, they go to look up their name and it doesn't show up, they know they have a problem.
00:14:16.998 --> 00:14:21.118
If they look up their name, but it's got an old address, they need to update their address.
00:14:21.388 --> 00:14:28.378
They may need to re-register depending on the rules in the state, but all of that will be available on that state website.
00:14:28.850 --> 00:14:36.398
So they're in the right place to get done the things they need to do to make sure they'll be able to vote and that it will be counted on election day.
00:14:37.398 --> 00:14:39.408
And before you ask.
00:14:39.908 --> 00:14:43.687
No, it is not too early to be thinking about this.
00:14:44.272 --> 00:14:49.062
I hear a little voice somewhere in the back of the crowd saying, yeah, but it's only at the beginning of April.
00:14:49.316 --> 00:14:50.576
Election's not till November.
00:14:51.278 --> 00:14:52.958
The primaries have already started.
00:14:53.548 --> 00:14:55.739
Five states have already had their primaries.
00:14:55.739 --> 00:14:56.578
They're over and done.
00:14:57.062 --> 00:15:00.272
And a whole lot more are on deck in the next couple of months.
00:15:00.422 --> 00:15:02.072
So we are in it, folks.
00:15:02.072 --> 00:15:04.591
We are in election season right now.
00:15:05.576 --> 00:15:11.072
And as you know, a lot of places for local elections, sometimes the primary is the election.
00:15:11.851 --> 00:15:17.101
So if people want a voice, they wanna make sure that they're involved in the primaries as well as the general election.
00:15:17.341 --> 00:15:21.581
But certainly you want to get your gears turning to get people ready for the general.
00:15:22.400 --> 00:15:24.410
Those are your first couple of assignments.
00:15:24.801 --> 00:15:27.811
Add that question to your routine interactions with clients.
00:15:28.366 --> 00:15:35.427
And access that universal resource so that you can hook people up to make sure their registration information is current.
